Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) is one of the world's leading pharmaceutical and healthcare companies. The company asked us to develop a solution to help them manage batch documentation in the formulation and production of their toothpaste products including familiar names like Aquafresh and Sensodyne.
Why? One of the main reasons was that every desktop computer in GSK had to go through a stringent validation process before an application could be installed on it. This meant heavy on-going costs from their IT support company.
Our solution was to develop this intranet based web application, called ABBDI - Automated Batch document management information system.
ABBDI is an internet-based document and batch management system which controls the production of all the company's UK and international toothpaste manufacture and distribution.
Here's how the project took shape: we converted the paper based model GSK had used for years into an online system allowing real time production, monitoring and reporting for the entire plant.
- A user interface.
- Usability to allow a wide range of people with different levels of computer skills would be using the site.
- Database architecture to support the many fields and fast querying required to report on the production line in real time.
- Change / auditing system compliant with British regulations for the production of pharmaceuticals
- Comprehensive reporting and management system allowing GSK to view every login, data change and access at the click of a button.
- Document Importing enableing old batch documents to be scanned and imported into the system so they can be stored digitally for future use.
- PDF production so that new batch documents can be produced as secure PDF documents which can’t be altered by production staff.
ABBDI sits on a central server and is accessed by Internet Explorer. Now all GSK’s hundreds of client computers don’t need to install new software. This has cut the company’s overall IT costs dramatically. Security and stability is also much improved.
The project has been a resounding success. It continues to drive the production of GlaxoSmithKline toothpaste today.
We’re proud, every time we clean our teeth!
We also developed a GSK multi-media presenter
To work with ABBDI, we produced a multi media presenter. This displays real time information about plant status via 42” plasma screens throughout GSK concourses.
The presenter directly integrates with the database management system to provide management with seamless, real time reporting on production.
